El Gordo prizes explained, per ticket

New to Spain's Christmas draw? Here's what a décimo is, what it can win and what you'd actually take home. And to check all your numbers at once, Mis Décimos is an Android app.

Billete, décimo, participación

A full ticket (billete) is split into ten décimos of 20 € each, and that's what most people buy. A participación is a smaller share of a décimo, sold by bars, clubs and workplaces, often with a small surcharge. You win a part of the prize in proportion to what you played.

What each prize pays per décimo

Figures follow recent draws. The official programme for each year is what counts.

PrizePer décimoEstimated net
First, "El Gordo" (1)400,000 €328,000 €
Second (1)125,000 €108,000 €
Third (1)50,000 €48,000 €
Fourth (2)20,000 €20,000 €
Fifth (8)6,000 €6,000 €

Refund (same last digit as El Gordo)20 €20 €

Prizes you won't hear sung on TV

Numbers right next to the first three prizes win 2,000 €, 1,250 € and 960 € per décimo. Numbers in the same hundred as the top prizes, or sharing the last two digits with the first three, win 100 €. So a number can win without ever being sung, which is why checking by ear so often fails. Mis Décimos looks up your exact number, though the result is for information only.

Tax

Anything above 40,000 € per décimo is taxed at 20 %, withheld when you collect. On El Gordo: 400,000 € minus the 40,000 € exempt leaves 360,000 €, taxed at 72,000 €, so you keep 328,000 €. If you're tax resident elsewhere, your home country may treat it differently: ask an adviser. This page isn't tax advice.

Where to collect

Up to 2,000 € per décimo at any official lottery outlet. Above that, at authorised banks, with the original ticket and your ID. You have three months from the day after the draw. A décimo belongs to whoever holds it, so keep it safe, and if you split one, write down who played what.
